In June 2017 Bermuda will, for the first time, be hosting the 35th America’s Cup. Ardent sailors from across the globe will converge here to take part in this 165-year-old sailing event and the world’s oldest continuous sporting event.
The iconic Great Sound (the body of water forming the natural harbour) makes a spectacular backdrop for AC62 catamarans that will be flying across the water at speeds of up to 50mph, resembling something out of a Star Wars set. The two-mile long windward/leeward race starts and finishes just north of Morgan’s Point.
Racing is scheduled to start with the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers in May 26 2017 and the top Challenger will meet Defending Champions Oracle Team USA in the 35th America’s Cup Match presented by Louis Vuitton beginning June 17th 2017.
The third leg of the America’s Cup World Series took place in the British owned territory in October last year ahead of this major event to much fanfare, loud music and champagne.
When the America’s Cup is over, expect celebrations to continue into the night in all the bars and restaurants on Front Street.
Bermuda comprises 181 islands over 21 square miles with around 60,000 residents. Famous for sun and sand, Bermuda is also known for its water activities.
